Real Madrid will elect the president on June 7.
Real Madrid, the runner-up in the Spanish football league, has set the date for the presidential elections between the current president Florentino PƩrez and businessman Enrique Riquelme on June 7, as announced by the Madrid club on Tuesday.
The voting, which has been approved by the club's electoral committee, will take place at "Ciudad Real Madrid," the club's complex located in Valdebebas on the outskirts of the Spanish capital.
About 100,000 members of Real Madrid will also be able to cast their votes by mail.
After an initial term from 2000 to 2006, PƩrez returned to the presidency of the royal club in 2009, before being re-elected unopposed on four consecutive occasions, the last of which was in January 2025.
The businessman, who was 79 years old at the time, was re-elected for a four-year term; however, he ultimately decided to call for early elections after two consecutive seasons without winning any major titles, as Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League by German club Bayern Munich.
His opponent, Enrique Riquelme, who is 37 years old and the head of the "Cox" group specializing in water and energy, is the first candidate to challenge PƩrez, a prominent figure in the club's history.
This timeline could delay the anticipated return of Portuguese coach JosĆ© Mourinho, after 13 years since his first term on the royal club's bench, as he is considered the favorite to succeed Ćlvaro Arbeloa.
