Germany enters the race for the "2038 World Cup."
The German Football Association is intensifying its efforts to study the possibility of submitting a bid to host the World Cup in either 2038 or 2042.
A spokesperson for the association confirmed that the federation presented its ideas to the executive committee of the German Football League for the first time, but no decision has been made yet regarding approval or rejection.
According to the German newspaper "Bild," the project includes 14 stadiums with a capacity of at least 40,000 spectators, while the list of potential hosts includes the venues for the UEFA Euro 2024, which are Berlin, Dortmund, Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, in addition to Bremen, Kaiserslautern, Mönchengladbach, and Hanover.
The German Football Association is currently in discussions with policymakers regarding financial support for the tournament, including the guarantees required by FIFA and the necessary financial contributions to host the World Cup.
The German Football Association also intends to clarify when FIFA will grant the right to host the 2038 World Cup, and whether European candidates will be allowed to submit hosting bids at that time.
FIFA's regulations have recently been interpreted to state that a continent must be absent from hosting twice before it can apply to host the World Cup again.
The German Football Association assumes that Europe is unlikely to be eligible to host the World Cup until 2042, given that the 2030 World Cup will be held in Spain and Portugal (in addition to Morocco, with one match each in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay).
Saudi Arabia is set to host the World Cup in 2034.
The German Olympic Association is preparing to apply to host the Summer Olympics for either the 2036, 2040, or 2044 editions, but the German Football Association sees no issue with that.
Brazil recently hosted both events consecutively: the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The United States will do the same by hosting the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Germany has previously hosted the men's World Cup in 1974 and 2006, the women's World Cup in 2011, and recently organized the men's Euro 2024, and will host the women's Euro in 2029.
