Spain strips Argentina of the title .. "La Roja" is crowned World Cup 2026.
The Spanish national football team won the 2026 World Cup title today, Sunday, after defeating the Argentine team, the defending champions of the previous edition, with a single goal in extra time, following a goalless draw of 0-0 in the regular time of the final match.
The only goal of the match came in the 106th minute of the second extra half, when striker Ferran Torres took advantage of a ball inside the penalty area and shot it powerfully into the roof of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's net, granting "La Roja" a new world title after their first victory in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The match saw a clear dominance from the Spanish team from the early minutes, as their players imposed significant possession of the ball and created several dangerous chances, the most notable of which came from Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, and Fabian Ruiz.
In contrast, the Argentine team settled for retreating to their defensive areas and relying on counterattacks, while Lionel Messi found himself isolated from the attacking third due to the tight marking imposed by coach Luis de la Fuente.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was the star of the Argentine team during regular time, as he saved a series of Spanish attempts, including shots from Lamine Yamal and Pedri, as well as headers from Aymeric Laporte and Nico Williams, keeping the score level at 0-0 until the end of regular time.
Argentina's task became more complicated in stoppage time of the second half, after the referee showed a red card to Enzo Fernandez for a strong challenge on defender Pau Torres, leaving the "Tango" team to finish the match with ten players before heading into extra time.
During the first extra half, Spain continued its attacking pressure, and Nico Williams scored a goal that was disallowed for committing a foul against defender Nicolas Otamendi, before the decisive moment came in the 106th minute through Ferran Torres, who took advantage of the numerical superiority and the fatigue evident in the Argentine defense.
