Trump's presence ignites the World Cup final.

American President Donald Trump will be in the spotlight at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, having already caused one of the most controversial moments of the tournament.

Trump is expected to present the trophy to the winner of the final match between Spain and Argentina, alongside FIFA President and his close friend Gianni Infantino.

The final, which will take place in New Jersey, will be Trump's first match at the World Cup; an unusual move for the 80-year-old president known for his love of being in the limelight.

But this is not the first time he has intervened in the tournament's proceedings.

Less than two weeks ago, Trump made a widely controversial phone call to Infantino, in which he urged FIFA to overturn a red card issued to American striker Folarin Balogun, so he could participate in the Round of 16 match against Belgium.

Despite the ensuing controversy over fairness and influence, Trump praised the 2026 tournament, calling it the best ever.

Trump said during a reception held by FIFA with Infantino at Trump Tower in New York on Friday: "This was perhaps the most successful sporting event in the history of the world. It was amazing."

He added that the tournament has also contributed to the growing popularity of soccer in the United States, where American football, baseball, and basketball still dominate the sports scene.

He said: "It turns out we are a soccer country, and I think it will continue to be that way," adding that his 20-year-old son Barron is a fan of the game.

First Lady Melania Trump, Barron's mother, is expected to attend the final, along with her father Viktor Knavs, with the American president.

The final may also present an opportunity for some much-needed diplomacy.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and members of the Spanish royal family are scheduled to attend, despite Trump recently attacking Madrid for what he considered a failure to assist in the war on Iran and not meeting NATO spending goals.

Leaders from the two partner countries of the United States in hosting the tournament, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, will also be present amid ongoing tensions with the American president known for his unpredictable stances.
