A study monitors the targeting of Morocco's participation in the "World Cup" with provocative content.
A recent study by the Moroccan Observatory for Media and Digital Vigilance, titled "Monitoring Media and Digital Behavior Accompanying the Moroccan National Team's Participation in the 2026 World Cup," revealed that "Morocco has become one of the most prominent players in the digital discussions surrounding the World Cup; the monitoring process showed that Morocco's presence in the media and digital space far exceeded the limits of sports competition, becoming a focal point for discussion on numerous media and digital platforms at national, Arab, African, and international levels. Its name has also been associated with various issues, including sports performance, national identity, the country's image, relations between peoples, and sports diplomacy, alongside the distinctiveness of its audience."
The same study, which aimed to understand the nature of the discourses, trends, and interactions related to Morocco during the current edition of the World Cup, based on more than 500 posts, comments, and digital interactions, stated that "the national team's sports achievements have transformed into one of the most prominent manifestations of enhancing pride in national identity and belonging to Morocco, no longer perceived merely as sports results. This was reflected in the widespread presence of national symbols, flags, and the national anthem, and in the intensity of digital interactions that linked the team's success to Morocco's image and its international standing."
The document also noted that "Morocco's image in the digital space was characterized by a clear duality in the representations and discourses circulated, as the highlighting of the kingdom as a sports and organizational model coincided with the spread of content marked by prejudice, skepticism, or mockery, especially on certain pages and accounts with political or sports backgrounds; this reflects that Morocco's image in the digital space has become hostage to the political, media, and cultural contexts specific to each platform and each country."
The same source indicated that "the process of shaping Morocco's digital image has increasingly relied on the contributions of influencers, content creators, audiences, and individual accounts, whose impact sometimes surpasses that of traditional media. Short videos, live broadcasts, comments, and interactive content have become some of the most important sources for forming impressions among audiences inside and outside Morocco, highlighting the importance of digital vigilance in keeping pace with these transformations."
