Ajax Amsterdam wants to sign Onahi.
Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi has returned to the forefront of the European transfer market after catching attention with his performance for the Moroccan national team in the 2026 World Cup, becoming a primary target for Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam during the summer transfer window.
Reports, notably from Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, have indicated that Ajax has entered negotiations with Spanish club Girona to sign the Moroccan midfielder, who is considered one of the team's top priorities to strengthen the midfield.
Ounahi, 26 years old, delivered impressive performances with the "Atlas Lions" during the World Cup, playing in all matches until the quarter-finals against France, and scoring two goals against Canada in the round of 16, confirming the status he had previously gained during the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The player's brilliance came after a successful season at the club level, as he regained his form following a loan spell at Greek club Panathinaikos, before moving to Girona, where he quickly established himself in the starting lineup under coach Michel.
Ounahi is under contract with Girona until June 2030, which includes a release clause estimated at around 25 million euros, posing a significant obstacle for Ajax, which is seeking to reduce the transfer fee and reach an agreement on more favorable financial terms.
In the Netherlands, the player has received praise from several observers, with journalist Henk Spaan from "Het Parool" stating that Ounahi's current market value, estimated at around 10 million euros according to "Transfermarkt," represents an opportunity for Ajax, describing the player as possessing great talent and exceptional technical abilities.
