Heulmand joins Atlético Madrid.
Spanish club Atlético Madrid has strengthened its squad by signing Danish international defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand, coming from Portuguese Sporting Lisbon, as announced by the club today, Saturday.
Hjulmand, who is 27 years old, has signed a contract with Atlético Madrid that extends until the summer of 2031.
The Madrid club praised, in a statement published on its official website, the "physical strength of the Danish player, his ability to regain possession, and his deep understanding of the game."
Hjulmand has played 27 matches for the Danish national team, during which he scored one goal.
The player began his career in Denmark before having an experience in Austria, then moved to Italian Lecce in 2021, where he became, at the age of 23, the second youngest captain of a team in Serie A after Roma legend Francesco Totti.
He then moved to Sporting Lisbon, where he spent three seasons, winning the Portuguese league title twice, in addition to the Portuguese Cup.
Hjulmand's signing is Atlético Madrid's second during the current summer transfer window, following the acquisition of Spanish international left-back Alejandro Grimaldo from German Bayer Leverkusen, while the club continues its efforts to finalize the signing of South Korean attacking midfielder Lee Kang-in, a player from French Paris Saint-Germain.
