South Africa turns the page on Hugo Broos.
Belgian coach Hugo Broos, 74 years old, has left his position as coach of the South African national team after the 2026 World Cup, where "Bafana Bafana" reached the Round of 16, according to a source from the local football federation who spoke to AFP on Friday.
The same source said: "Hugo can continue working with the national team, but in a different role," adding: "We have received many nominations for the national coach position, and Pitso (Mosimane) is one of them."
Broos announced his departure to the Belgian magazine "Humo," explaining that the president of the South African federation, Danny Jordaan, wants to keep him "in another role, as an advisor or something similar."
Under Broos' leadership, South Africa qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in its history, finishing second behind Mexico in the group stage, thanks to a victory over South Korea (1-0). However, their journey ended in the Round of 16 after losing to Canada (1-0).
The Belgian coach, who took over in 2021, also led "Bafana Bafana" to a third-place finish in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2024.
Pitso Mosimane is considered one of the top candidates to succeed him, having previously held this position from 2010, after the World Cup in South Africa, to 2012, without achieving significant success.
Since then, he has coached Mamelodi Sundowns (2012-2020) and the Egyptian club Al Ahly, with whom he won the African Champions League title three times.
