Al-Amiri: I do not blame Wahbi.. and the national team needs a coach with a big name.
Morocco's dream in the 2026 World Cup ended in the quarter-finals after another loss to the French national team, which clearly outperformed tactically throughout the match, raising questions about the future of national coach Mohamed Wahbi.
Moroccan coaches explained this performance by the quality gap between the players of Morocco and France; the latter has a complete attacking arsenal, while the national team seemed to lack offensive solutions, which forced it to revert to defense in hopes of reaching penalties.
Aziz Al-Amri, a national coach, said: “We cannot blame Wahbi because the role of the national coach remains limited. The French national team did not defeat us because they have a great coach, but because their players possess strength and efficiency that surpass our players, and this is a reality that cannot be denied; you cannot win against a team with world-class stars just by relying on the coach's plans or the crowd's encouragement.”
Al-Amri added, in a statement to Hespress, that defeating France requires having a strong attacking line that rivals theirs, which includes players capable of playing smoothly and with great strength. He continued: “We played yesterday's match without a real and effective attack, and the main problem was not with the coach, but with the lack of strikers capable of making a difference, especially with the injury of the only available striker, Al-Sibari.”
The speaker noted that reaching the quarter-finals is a significant achievement that prestigious teams like the Netherlands and Germany have not reached. From this perspective, the national coach should not be blamed, even though it is essential for him to have a name and international history, just like the French coach who has a rich career as an international player and titles with major clubs.
When the national coach has a significant name and history, according to the speaker, it positively reflects on the team. He added: “After Hervé Renard's departure, it would have been better to hire a coach with a strong name like Skitawi,” indicating that the issue is not about opposing the current or previous coach or blaming them, as if he had players at the level of the French players, he would have been able to achieve victory.
