Portugal agrees with Jesus to lead the national team.
Jorge Jesus is set to be introduced on Friday as the new coach of the Portugal national football team, replacing Spaniard Roberto Martinez, according to what the French Press Agency learned on Thursday from a source close to the matter.
The source indicated that the 71-year-old Portuguese coach and the local football federation reached a "full agreement" and will hold a press conference on Friday at 3:00 PM (14:00 GMT) at the football authority's headquarters in the suburbs of Lisbon.
Jesus will take charge of Portugal five days after their exit from the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where they lost to Spain 0-1.
The coach, who left Saudi club Al-Nassr in May after leading them to the league title, is required to sign a four-year contract, until the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.
Jesus, a veteran in Portuguese football, has managed dozens of clubs in his country, most notably Benfica and Sporting, the two giants of Lisbon.
Abroad, he coached Brazilian Flamengo and Turkish Fenerbahçe, then moved to work with Saudi clubs Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, where he led the latter, which features his compatriot star Cristiano Ronaldo, to the league title.
After Portugal's elimination on Monday, "CR7," who is 41 years old and a five-time winner of the Ballon d'Or, confirmed that this sixth World Cup was his last, without revealing whether he intends to continue his international career.
With the Portugal national team, which he has led since 2023, Roberto Martinez won the Nations League title in June 2025.
