Lawyers: Infantino violates the principle of neutrality.
The organization "Fair Square," which advocates for human rights, announced today, Wednesday, that it will file a complaint with the Ethics Committee of the International Olympic Committee regarding what it described as "repeated violations of political neutrality" by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The oath taken by members of the International Olympic Committee, including Infantino, requires them to work "independently of commercial and political interests," a commitment also affirmed by the Olympic Charter.
The organization's move came after the International Olympic Committee faced several questions in recent months about how this principle aligns with the close relationship that FIFA's president has established with U.S. President Donald Trump, which reached the point of Infantino praising Trump's domestic policies.
The International Olympic Committee had concluded, last February, a controversy raised by Infantino's attendance at a "Peace Council" meeting called by Trump, where the FIFA president was seen wearing a red hat bearing the slogans "USA" and "45-47," referring to Trump's two presidential terms.
A spokesperson for the International Olympic Committee at the time stated: "We recognize that FIFA supports, through football, a broad investment program to revitalize sports in Gaza, Palestine, by providing sports infrastructure, educational initiatives, and high-level development projects," considering that the international federation "is doing its part," without addressing the hat worn by Infantino.
The President of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry, was asked on Tuesday about the phone call Trump made to Infantino, before FIFA decided on Sunday to lift the suspension imposed on American striker Folarin Balogun after he received a red card.
Coventry said: "To my knowledge, the Ethics Committee has not received any complaint in this regard. And of course, if a complaint is received, it will be considered."
According to the International Olympic Committee's website, anyone can "provide information regarding the suspicion" of a violation of the organization's ethical principles.
The organization "Fair Square," which was joined by the Norwegian Football Federation last June, also filed a complaint with FIFA's Ethics Committee in December, accusing Infantino of repeatedly violating the principle of neutrality stipulated in the statutes of the international football federation.
The organization confirmed that, so far, there are no indications of "opening an investigation regarding this complaint."
