Portugal announces the termination of coach Martinez's contract.
The Portuguese Football Federation announced today, Wednesday, the end of the contract of Spanish coach Roberto Martínez after being eliminated in the round of 16 of the World Cup.
The Portuguese Federation stated in a statement on its website, "The Portuguese Federation extends its sincere thanks to Roberto Martínez and his coaching staff for their professionalism and dedication over the past three and a half years, which saw the victory in the UEFA Nations League in 2025."
The statement indicated that the president of the federation is currently working on appointing a new coach with the aim of continuing to enhance ambition and a winning culture in upcoming tournaments.
Martínez announced after the loss to Spain in the round of 16 last Monday that he would leave his position, describing this defeat as the end of an era for the team.
Martínez stated that his contract has ended and that Portuguese football now has the opportunity to appoint a new coach.
He added in a press conference after the match, "I came to Portugal to win the World Cup, and I believe that without winning it, there is no point in continuing.
"The board (in the federation) and the president now have the opportunity to choose the new coach... my contract ends today. There isn't much more to say."
