"The Atlas Lions" seek revenge against France.
France, the 2018 champion and 2022 runner-up and the top contender for the current edition of the North American World Cup, will meet the strong Morocco on Thursday at Gillette Stadium near Boston, in a rematch of the last edition's semi-final.
France has dominated its first four matches in this edition, thanks to its star-studded attack, but it had to exert a great effort to achieve a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay from a penalty scored by its top scorer and current tournament's second top scorer, Kylian Mbappé.
The "Blues" have not suffered any losses in their last 12 official matches (11 wins and one draw), achieving seven consecutive victories.
Coach Didier Deschamps enters history by leading his 25th match in the finals, equaling the record, but achieving the twentieth win is not guaranteed; three of France's losses in the World Cup this century (excluding penalty shootouts) have come against African teams (3 out of 6).
As for Morocco, it showed great efficiency in the Round of 16, scoring three goals without conceding against Canada, one of the host teams, from just five shots on target.
The "Atlas Lions" are behind the only two unbeaten streaks for an African team over five matches in a single World Cup edition, and they will seek revenge after losing to France in their sixth match in the 2022 edition.
This achievement would mark the second time an African team reaches the semi-finals, following their accomplishment four years ago.
Additionally, the unbeaten streak of ten matches since the Africa Cup of Nations final (7 wins and 3 draws) indicates the Moroccans' ability to defy expectations.
France has not lost in the previous six encounters between the two teams (4 wins and 2 draws), achieving a 2-0 victory in the only official match, which was in the semi-finals in Qatar.
With Mbappé shining with seven goals so far, Michael Olise has been notably influential, contributing to eight goals in the last six matches with the national team (3 goals and 5 assists).
All five of his assists have come in this edition of the World Cup, putting him just three assists away from the tournament's all-time record!
Moroccan Azzedine Ounahi excelled by scoring a brace against Canada, ending an 11-match goal drought in the finals.
Notably, all eight of his international matches in which he scored have ended in victories for the "Atlas Lions," with the last seven of those matches accompanied by clean sheets.
