The Argentine national team, the reigning World Cup champions, came from behind to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory against their Egyptian counterparts today, Tuesday, booking a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The Egyptian team took the lead through Yasser Ibrahim in the 15th minute, before Mustafa Zico added a second goal in the 67th minute.
Prior to that, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) disallowed a goal scored by Zico in the 58th minute due to a foul committed by his teammate Marwan Attia during the build-up.
The Argentine team rallied in the final minutes, led by their star and captain Lionel Messi, who delivered a cross that Cristian Romero headed into the net in the 79th minute, reducing the deficit.
Messi then scored the equalizer himself in the 84th minute with a powerful shot from inside the penalty area.
In stoppage time, the defending champions snatched the winning goal and qualification through Enzo Fernandez, who scored with a header in the 90+3 minute, capitalizing on a precise cross from Lautaro Martinez.
With this victory, the Argentine team advances to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the match between Colombia and Switzerland, while Egypt concluded their commendable participation by reaching the Round of 16 for the first time since 1934; the year of the Pharaohs' first World Cup appearance.
