Kylian Mbappé receives "UN support."
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed its support for French national team captain Kylian Mbappé today, Tuesday, condemning the "racist" and "shameful" remarks made by a Paraguayan senator targeting him after the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
The spokesperson for the commission, Thameen Al-Khaitan, stated in a statement: "The racist and dehumanizing remarks aimed at French football player Kylian Mbappé by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amaria are unacceptable and, unfortunately, do not represent an isolated case." He added: "The racist incidents recorded during the 2026 FIFA World Cup reflect a broader phenomenon affecting football and sports in general."
Amaria launched a fierce attack on Mbappé after her country's team lost to France, 0-1, last Saturday in the Round of 16 of the World Cup in North America, following a difficult match filled with many mistakes and unsportsmanlike conduct from the Paraguayans.
The "Blues" ultimately managed to win and qualify for the quarter-finals thanks to a penalty scored by Mbappé in the second half.
The opposition senator in the Paraguayan Senate wrote on the platform "X": "This fool hasn't even learned to write. Instead of his mother's milk, he was suckling on coconuts, and the most cultured beings he has ever heard of in his life are chimpanzees."
The same senator added in another post on the same platform: "A Cameroonian, a product of colonialism, desperately tries to pretend he is French, resentful, newly wealthy, arrogant, and ugly. He was tense and terrified throughout the match, just like his entire team, who couldn't even score a single goal, and they won by sheer luck..."
These disgusting remarks sparked outrage from the French national team star, who described the senator on "X" as "despicable" and "unworthy of her position."
Mbappé received significant support, particularly from French President Emmanuel Macron and also from the Paraguayan government, which deemed the senator's remarks "contrary to the values and principles that uphold human dignity."
Al-Khaitan reminded that "public figures bear a special responsibility in combating racism, discrimination, and hate speech in their public interventions," calling on "countries and sports organizations" to "actively work to prevent acts of racism and all forms of discrimination."
