France condemns "racism against Mbappé."
French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari expressed her "deep discontent" today, Monday, regarding "disgusting and racist" remarks made by a member of the Paraguayan Senate about striker Kylian Mbappé, following her country's loss in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.
Senator Celeste Amarilla wrote on "X": "This fool hasn't even learned to write. Instead of breast milk, he was suckling from a coconut, and the most cultured people he has heard of are chimpanzees. You should have pointed your middle finger at him, Orlando Gheel (Paraguay's goalkeeper). Do that in the Senate and nothing happens."
In another post on "X," she wrote: "A Cameroonian, a product of colonialism, desperately trying to pretend to be French, resentful, newly wealthy, arrogant, and ugly. He was tense and terrified throughout the match, just like his entire team; they couldn't even score a single goal, they won thanks to a stroke of luck."
Minister Ferrari commented in a press statement: "I feel a deep anger regarding the remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla. France condemns in the strongest possible terms the racist insults directed at Kylian Mbappé."
She added: "These remarks are disgusting and shameful, especially as they are completely unacceptable if made by a political official. We will not remain silent in the face of racism. By attacking Kylian Mbappé, the senator is attacking everything our leader represents and everything our country symbolizes: liberty, equality, and fraternity," and she confirmed providing "full support to the captain, the coach, and the entire French team."
Mbappé led France to victory over Paraguay in an exciting and rough match by scoring the only goal of the game from a penalty, securing the "Roosters" a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.
