The European Union rejects the politicization of sports.
The European Union Commissioner for Sports, Glenn Michalef, confirmed on Monday that "decisions regarding sports rules belong to sports bodies, not to politicians," in light of the controversy surrounding American player Folarin Balogun that sparked widespread debate during the 2026 World Cup.
Michalef stated in a post on the platform "X": "Exerting any influence on sports decisions would undermine the independence of sports."
The International Football Federation (FIFA) decided on Sunday to suspend the enforcement of the red card penalty imposed on Balogun during the 2026 World Cup, following intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump, a move that sparked a wave of criticism.
