Aguirre announces his departure from coaching Mexico.
Javier Aguirre, the head coach of the Mexican national football team, announced his resignation from his position after the dramatic 2-3 loss on Sunday evening (Monday morning GMT) against the English team, which played with ten players, in the Round of 16 of the World Cup.
With this decision, which was planned in advance, Aguirre ended his third term with the Mexican national team.
Aguirre said: “I bid farewell to football, goodbye Estadio Azteca. I leave with pride.”
Aguirre first took charge of the Mexican national team in 2011 and remained in the position for a year. His second term lasted from April 2009 to the end of June 2010. His third term began in the summer of 2024.
Rafael Márquez will take over as the head coach of the Mexican national team after being part of the coaching staff for two years.
Aguirre said: “I told him that he can always count on me.”
