England's shortcomings end Mexico's dreams.
England eliminated Mexico, one of the host countries, from the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup after a difficult and thrilling 3-2 victory on Sunday at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Despite playing for more than half an hour with ten players after the expulsion of Jarell Quansah (54), the "Three Lions" advanced to the quarter-finals thanks to the outstanding duo of Jude Bellingham (36 and 38) and Harry Kane (60 from a penalty), while Julian Quinones (42) and Raul Jimenez (69 from a penalty) scored for Mexico.
England will face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Miami, after Norway eliminated Brazil 2-1 earlier.
This is the third consecutive time that England has reached the quarter-finals, from which they were eliminated in the previous edition by the runner-up France.
England wrote a "special chapter," as their German coach Thomas Tuchel said, in a stadium where they experienced the pain of elimination against Argentina in a famous match where the late legend Diego Maradona scored a goal with his hand, in a match that Gary Lineker and his teammates lost in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup.
Tuchel said, "When things get tough, they never give up and never lose faith; that was an extra step forward."
He added, "We have to absorb this moment; we are here at Estadio Azteca in Mexico, in the midst of a crazy match atmosphere. We gave our all on the pitch, each one of us. We need to absorb what happened, and now we move forward with all our strength and determination."
For his part, Kane said in a hoarse voice to Fox, "It was a crazy match. We had to fight. All the circumstances, the team (Mexico), everything was against us. But we found a solution."
He added, "The referee called everything against us, but in the end, it didn't matter. I'm happy."
With his two goals, Bellingham became the first player to score a brace at Estadio Azteca in a World Cup match since Maradona against Belgium in 1986.
The midfielder said, "It's the best night of my career with England. It's unbelievable in every sense of the word. I can't express it right now. It's hard to absorb everything that happened: the goals, the penalty awarded against us, the penalty we got, and the red card. It was a chaotic match, but Mexico deserves credit; they were on a different level."
He continued, "We never underestimated them for a moment, and we knew they would be as strong as we expected. But this team showed great character tonight, and I'm proud of it."
