Queiroz announces departure from the Ghana national team.
The veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz announced today, Sunday, his departure from coaching the Ghana national team after leading them to the Round of 32 in the 2026 World Cup.
Queiroz wrote on his Instagram account: "We learned that football, like life, offers an eternal lesson: either you win or you learn."
He added: "I leave this journey proud of what we have achieved, but also with a positive dissatisfaction from those who always aspired for more. Reaching a higher level should not be the final goal, but the beginning of greater ambitions."
The Ghanaian team started their campaign in the tournament with a victory over Panama, winning 1-0, then drew 0-0 with England, before losing to Croatia 2-1.
In the Round of 32, the "Black Stars" exited the competition after losing to Colombia with an early goal.
Queiroz, who has previously coached the national teams of Portugal, Iran, Egypt, and Colombia, confirmed that "the future of the Ghana national team will not be built solely on the pitch, but must start from outside it, by providing the best possible environment to prepare, protect, and develop exceptional football talents in Ghana."
He concluded his message by saying: "To the fans, we may not be able to claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honored the colors of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on the biggest football stage."
The Ghana Football Association announced in April that Queiroz was appointed as the national team coach, succeeding Otto Addo, to lead them in the World Cup, without disclosing the duration of the contract.
Queiroz, 73 years old, previously led the Portugal national team in the 2010 World Cup and also coached the Iran national team in three consecutive editions of the tournament.
