"The CAF celebrates Morocco's historic achievement."
The Confederation of African Football praised the Moroccan national team's qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, following their victory over Canada with three goals to none, considering that the "Atlas Lions" continue to write history on the global stage.
The official website of "CAF" confirmed that the Moroccan team has become the first African team to reach the quarter-finals in two consecutive World Cup editions, after continuing its brilliance that began in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, when it became the first representative of the African continent to reach the semi-finals.
The report noted that the Moroccan team faced difficulties during the first half against Canada, which imposed significant pressure and created several chances, but the brilliance of goalkeeper Yassine Bounou kept the net clean, before the face of the match changed after the break.
"Caf" highlighted the crucial role of Azzedine Ounahi, who opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a powerful shot following a well-executed free kick, before returning to score the second goal in the 82nd minute after a quick counter-attack, while Sofiane Rahimi capped off the "Atlas Lions" hat-trick in stoppage time.
The report added that Ounahi's brace carried historical significance, as he became the first African player to score two goals in a knockout match at the World Cup since Senegal's Henri Camara against Sweden in the 2002 World Cup, while the Moroccan team continued its winning streak in matches where Ounahi scores.
"Caf" confirmed that the Moroccan team continues to carry the hopes of African football in the World Cup, having once again proven its ability to handle knockout matches, thanks to its strong character and increasing experience, setting up a date in the quarter-finals with the winner of the match between France and Paraguay, continuing its quest for a new historic achievement.
