Penalty kicks send Egypt to the Round of 16 in the World Cup at the expense of Australia.
Egypt reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup for the first time in its history, after defeating Australia in a penalty shootout 4-2 following a 1-1 draw in both regular and extra time during the Round of 32 on Friday in Arlington near Dallas.
Substitute Hossam Abdel-Meguid scored the winning fourth penalty for Egypt after Harry Souttar and Lucas Hernington missed two penalties for Australia.
Egypt took an early lead with a header from Imam Ashour (13), but the "Socceroos" equalized at the start of the second half with an own goal from Mohamed Hani (55).
This is the first victory for the "Pharaohs" in the knockout stages, in their fourth World Cup appearance after 1934, 1990, and 2018.
