The World Cup shock leads to the dismissal of Germany's coach.
Julian Nagelsmann has resigned from his position as coach of the German national team, just four days after the painful elimination in the Round of 32 at the World Cup against Paraguay, according to several German media outlets on Friday morning.
According to the "Bild" newspaper and "Sky" network, Nagelsmann (38 years old), who is under contract until the summer of 2028, agreed to the German Football Association's request to resign from his position, which he has held since September 2023. This request was presented to him on Thursday following a three-hour meeting to discuss the German national team's latest failure in the World Cup.
The issue of Nagelsmann's successor is expected to be addressed quickly, with Jürgen Klopp (59 years old) topping the list of the most likely candidates.
After successful stints at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund in Germany, Klopp has become a legend at Liverpool, leading them to the Premier League title in 2020, ending a 30-year drought, just a year after winning the Champions League.
In January 2024, Klopp announced that he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season, after nine years with the team since his arrival in the fall of 2015; starting January 1, 2025, he will take on the role of global football director at Red Bull, overseeing the clubs affiliated with the Austrian company.
The challenge awaiting Nagelsmann's successor seems enormous, as Germany has suffered three consecutive major setbacks in World Cup finals: elimination in the group stage in 2018 and 2022, followed by the recent exit in the Round of 32 in Boston against the modest Paraguay team via penalties.
