Portugal narrowly advances to the World Cup Round of 16 at the expense of Croatia.
Portugal reached the Round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup with great difficulty, turning around a deficit against Croatia to win 2-1 on Thursday in Toronto, after a dramatic match.
Croatian Ivan Perišić opened the scoring (53), but Cristiano Ronaldo equalized (68 from a penalty), before substitute Gonçalo Ramos gifted his team the ticket to advance (90+4).
The Portuguese team will face Spain in the Round of 16, who won against Austria 3-0 earlier, in Arlington, Dallas next Monday.
Ronaldo, a player for Al Nassr, became the oldest player to participate in a knockout match in World Cup history, and the oldest player to score a goal in the knockout stages, at 41 years old, before being substituted in the 81st minute for Al Hilal player Ruben Neves.
