The Japan national team clings to Moriyasu's experience.
Hajime Moriyasu is preparing to continue in his role as the head coach of the Japanese national football team, as the Japan Football Association is set to officially announce this step.
Moriyasu led his country’s team to reach the Round of 32 in the 2026 World Cup, which was held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, before losing 2-1 to Brazil, the record holder for the most World Cup titles with five championships.
Despite the steady progress shown by the Japanese team on the global stage over the past two decades, it has yet to achieve any victories in the knockout stages during all its World Cup participations.
Moriyasu took over the coaching of the "Samurai" team after the end of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, successfully leading them to the Round of 16 in the Qatar 2022 tournament, before being eliminated in a penalty shootout against Croatia.
The Japanese news agency Kyodo reported a desire for Moriyasu to continue in his position, quoting the president of the Japan Football Association, Tsuneyasu Miyamoto, as saying, "We will need to make the necessary arrangements to achieve this goal."
Reports indicated that Moriyasu's contract will be extended for one year, ensuring his leadership of the team in the upcoming Asian Cup, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia early next year, where the Japanese team enters as one of the top contenders for the continental title.
