Manuel Neuer announces his retirement from international play.
Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper of the German national football team, has officially ended his international career after the team was eliminated from the World Cup tournament yesterday, Monday, against Paraguay.
When asked by a reporter from the "ARD" network if the match against Paraguay, which took place in the Round of 32 in Foxborough, was his last, the Bayern Munich goalkeeper replied: "Yes."
Neuer added in statements to the "Magenta TV" network that he would not be available to start a new phase with the national team after the end of the tournament, saying: "It is very painful for the journey to end this way."
Neuer, who is 40 years old, initially ended his international career after the UEFA Euro 2024, after winning the World Cup title with Germany in 2014, before being called up again by coach Julian Nagelsmann to participate in the World Cup and being given the position of starting goalkeeper.
Neuer participated in all four matches for the national team during the tournament, raising his tally to 128 international matches; however, he was unable to keep a clean sheet in any of them, before Germany exited the competition after losing to Paraguay 3-4 on penalties.
Neuer will now return to Munich, where he has a contract with Bayern Munich that extends for one more season.
