Van Dijk: We were not the best against Morocco.
Virgil van Dijk, the captain of the Dutch national football team, expressed his great disappointment after his country's exit against Morocco in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, following a 1-1 draw and then losing in the penalty shootout.
The Dutch team was leading before the Moroccan team equalized in stoppage time, then secured qualification from the penalty spot, ending the "Oranje's" journey in the tournament.
Van Dijk stated in remarks to the Dutch NOS network, "These are some of the hardest moments in any football player's career. It's very difficult to analyze what happened now. It was a strong and intense match, but we are out of the tournament."
The captain of the Dutch national football team added, "We had good periods during the match, and we could have been better, but that won't change anything now. Unfortunately, we are out again."
The player concluded his statements by saying, "I want to return to my family as soon as possible. That's all that's on my mind at this moment."
