The Moroccan victory breaks the "Dutch dominance" against the teams of the African continent.
The Moroccan national football team ended two historic streaks for the Dutch national team, eliminating them from the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup after a draw in regular and extra time (1-1) and winning in penalties.
Holland entered the match coming off five consecutive victories against African teams in World Cup finals, before Morocco put an end to this streak and eliminated the "Oranje" from the tournament.
The match also marked the first time in history that Holland exited the Round of 16 in the World Cup, having been accustomed to reaching this stage at least since their first appearance in the competition.
The bitterness of the elimination increased after the Dutch team opened the scoring, only for Morocco to equalize in stoppage time and secure qualification through penalties.
This is only the second time that the Dutch national team has lost a knockout match in the World Cup after being in the lead, following their defeat in the 1974 World Cup final against West Germany with a score of 2-1 on July 7, 1974.
With this achievement, the Moroccan national team continues to write a new chapter in its World Cup history, having put an end to two historic records for Holland; thus securing their place in the next round, where they will face the Canadian team.
