The German national team, four-time world champions, exited the 2026 World Cup early with a surprising loss to Paraguay after a marathon match that ended 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in both regular and extra time.

The match marked the first instance of extra time and penalty shootouts in this edition being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Paraguay finished the first half leading with a goal scored by Julio Enciso in the 42nd minute.

The Germans equalized in the second half with a header from Arsenal striker Kai Havertz in the 54th minute.

In extra time, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) disallowed a goal for the Germans scored by defender Jonathan Tah in the 102nd minute due to a foul by his teammate Waldemar Anton against the Paraguayan goalkeeper.
