Exclusion leads to the dismissal of the Korean national team coach.
Hong Myung-bo, the coach of the South Korean national football team, who faced widespread criticism, resigned today, Sunday, according to media reports; this came just one day after his team was eliminated from the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.
The former captain, who is 57 years old, exited the World Cup finals early for the second time in his second term as head coach, following the failure in 2014.
South Korea was expected to advance from Group A, which included Mexico, one of the host countries, as well as South Africa and the Czech Republic; however, they lost to South Africa and Mexico, finishing with only three points, achieving their only victory against the Czech Republic 2-1.
South Korea waited until the last day of the group stage hoping to qualify as one of the best eight third-placed teams; however, the results did not go in their favor.
Myung-bo took responsibility today, Sunday, and submitted his resignation, according to the Yonhap news agency.
