Jordan bids farewell .. and Messi continues to make history.
The Jordanian national team exited empty-handed in its historic first participation in the FIFA World Cup finals, after a third loss to the defending champion Argentina 1-3 on Saturday in Dallas, in a match where Lionel Messi scored his 19th World Cup goal, during the third round of the group stage.
Argentina, aiming to become the third team to win the title twice in a row, achieved a perfect score in Group 10, where Austria finished as runners-up on goal difference with Algeria after their 3-3 draw.
Argentina has set a date in the Round of 32 with the Cape Verde national team.
Before the match, coach Lionel Scaloni announced on Friday that Messi would sit on the bench, while the Moroccan coach of the Jordanian team, Jamal Salami, surprised the audience by excluding the French Rennes striker, Al-Tamari, from the starting lineup.
Al-Tamari told beIN Sports, "We could have performed better in this tournament; we bear some responsibility. We could have qualified for the second round; no one fell short, and we worked very hard."
He continued, "If we had been lucky and focused in the first two matches, we could have come out with a win or a draw. This is our first participation in the World Cup, and we gained experience. I hope this won't be our last (participation)."
For his part, Lo Celso told reporters in response to a question about whether the group stage was perfect for them, saying, "Yes, I think so. We had a very good first stage. We finished it with a perfect score."
He added, "Now the most important part begins. We have to turn the page and think about the (match against) Cape Verde because they will be a very tough opponent."
In Messi's absence, Scaloni gave the opportunity to Niko Bazz (21 years old), a star forward for Italian Como, who had 21 offensive contributions in various competitions last season.
When the starting lineup for each team was announced, Argentine striker Julian Alvarez received the loudest applause from the audience, as did his coach Scaloni, who led the Tango team to the title four years ago, although Messi stole the spotlight whenever his image appeared on the screen.
Despite the Argentine dominance in attendance, the Jordanian keffiyeh was widespread in the stands.
Seven minutes into the match, Giovanni Lo Celso issued the first warning with a disallowed goal for offside (7), then Nicolas Otamendi tried a header over the bar (13).
