Dutch player Gakpo is shocked by the loss of a child.
Liverpool striker and Dutch national team player Cody Gakpo was devastated by the loss of his child before birth, which may affect his mental state ahead of the match against Morocco in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.
Gakpo has requested respect for “privacy and space” during this difficult time after his partner, model Noa van der Bij, announced the news on Saturday.
The couple was expecting their second child but lost him before the due date in October.
Van der Bij posted a picture on social media showing them holding hands over a blanket and a wool hat.
She wrote, “With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during the pregnancy,” adding, “Thank you for your love and support. Elia Rafael Gakpo. Our love forever. Our son forever.”
In a post, Gakpo wrote, “This is a very difficult time for our family. We kindly ask for your respect in granting us privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding.”
The 27-year-old player started in all three of the Netherlands' group stage matches in the World Cup held in North America, contributing to his country's advancement to the Round of 32 by scoring a brace against Sweden.
The Netherlands will face Morocco on Tuesday in Mexico, which is co-hosting the finals along with the United States and Canada.
