Argentina defeats Austria with two clean goals.
The Argentine star Lionel Messi led his national team to secure a spot in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, after scoring both goals in the victory over Austria (2-0) today, Monday, at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, USA, during the second round of Group 10.
Messi opened the scoring in the 38th minute, giving the "Tango" team the lead before the end of the first half, before returning in stoppage time to confirm the victory by scoring the second goal in the fifth minute of added time (90+5).
The captain of Argentina continued to make history in the World Cup, as he became the all-time top scorer of the tournament after raising his tally to 18 goals, surpassing the record he shared with German Miroslav Klose. Messi had equaled Klose's record in the first round against Algeria when he scored a hat-trick.
With this victory, the Argentine team secured its qualification to the second round after achieving its second consecutive win in the group stage, strengthening its position at the top of Group 10.
Argentina is also close to clinching first place, as it only needs the Jordanian team to stumble against Algeria in the match scheduled later to ensure finishing the first round at the top of the group.
