Cape Verde draws with Uruguay.
The Cape Verde national team continued its adventure in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, successfully securing a valuable point after forcing Uruguay to a 2-2 draw today, Monday, in the second round of Group H.
Cape Verde began its campaign in the tournament by holding Spain, the 2010 World Cup champion, to a goalless draw in the first round in Atlanta, before managing to score its first two goals in its World Cup history against the two-time World Cup champions Uruguay.
Cape Verde took the lead in the 21st minute through Kevin Pina, scoring the country's first goal in World Cup history, before Uruguay equalized through Maximiliano Araujo in the 44th minute.
In the sixth minute of stoppage time in the first half, Agustin Canobbio scored Uruguay's second goal, before Cape Verde equalized in the second half through Helio Varela, who capitalized on a mistake by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to score the equalizer in the 61st minute.
With this result, Cape Verde strengthened its chances of reaching the Round of 32 if it wins its third match against Saudi Arabia next Saturday, while Uruguay now needs to achieve a positive result against Spain on the same day.
