Iran's national team draws with Belgium, complicating the calculations for Group G in the World Cup.
The Belgian national team, the top contender in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, continued its disappointing results after settling for a goalless draw against Iran this Sunday evening in Los Angeles, in the second round.
Both teams ended the match with clean sheets, despite the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) disallowing a goal scored by Iranian star Mehdi Taremi in the 25th minute for offside.
The Belgian team was also affected by a numerical disadvantage after their defender Nathan Ngoy received a direct red card in the 67th minute.
Each team earned one point, bringing their total to two points, complicating their chances of qualifying for the Round of 32, ahead of the match between Egypt and New Zealand scheduled for early Monday (Makkah time).
The Belgian team had started its campaign with a difficult draw against Egypt, ending 1-1, while they will face New Zealand early next Saturday in Vancouver.
On the other hand, the Iranian team had drawn against New Zealand 2-2 and is preparing for a decisive match against Egypt in the third round in Seattle.
Both teams exchanged attacking attempts during the first half hour, with the Belgian team, which played without its star Jeremy Doku due to his travel for the birth of his child, threatening the Iranian goal through Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, Maxim De Kuyper, Leandro Trossard, and Nathan Ngoy, while the Iranian goalkeeper saved a powerful shot from Youri Tielemans.
In contrast, the Iranian team appeared more dangerous, as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved a dangerous attempt from Hossein Kananian in the 14th minute, before Saeed Ezzatollah's header went just past the post.
In the 25th minute, Mehdi Taremi managed to find the net after a free kick taken by Ehsan Haji Safi with a clever pass, but the VAR intervened and disallowed the goal for offside.
