Lekjaa: We will not host the African championships.
The president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, revealed that Morocco has decided not to bid in the future to host any sports competitions at the continental level, noting that if any other country expresses a desire to host these competitions, the kingdom wishes them success and good luck in their endeavors.
Lekjaa confirmed during his appearance on a program on the "Al Jazeera 360" platform that Morocco's intervention to organize continental competitions was limited to tournaments that other countries refused to host, the latest of which was the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations finals at the Mohammed VI Football Complex.
Lekjaa explained that the financial returns from these events remain very meager and weak, but Morocco accepted to organize them out of a strong commitment to support sports and assist young people in the African continent.
He continued: "We always assured the Confederation of African Football that if no country is willing to host youth competitions, Morocco opens its doors to host them, because we firmly believe that youth are the foundation, and without attention to them, we will not find national teams participating in the Africa Cup of Nations or competing for World Cup spots."
The president further clarified: "Our organization of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations for three consecutive editions was for one clear reason, which is the lack of any desire from other countries to host the competition, either to avoid the high financial costs or due to the weak infrastructure and stadiums that many countries in Africa unfortunately lack."
The football official in Morocco concluded his statements by emphasizing that the kingdom has been extending a helping hand to the Confederation of African Football with the aim of elevating the level of the game and developing it on the continent, without expecting any return or financial benefit from it.
