Lopetegui is proud of the manly performance of the Qatari team.
Qatar's national team coach, Spanish Julen Lopetegui, expressed his feelings of "pride and happiness" after securing the first point in the history of "Al Annabi" in the World Cup following a 1-1 draw against Switzerland on Saturday in San Francisco Bay as part of Group B.
The Qatari team seemed on the verge of suffering their fourth defeat in their World Cup history (having previously lost all three of their matches in the 2022 World Cup on home soil), before Boualem Khouki snatched the equalizer with a powerful header in the fourth minute of stoppage time, giving the Gulf state its first-ever World Cup point.
All four teams in the group ended up with one point after Friday's match between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina ended with the same result.
Lopetegui commented on the historic result, "I am very proud of the team. I told the players that even if we hadn't scored the equalizer, I would have been proud of the mentality and discipline they showed today."
He added, "But fortunately, we scored the goal and achieved a result that will remain in history."
Lopetegui continued, "We were a bit lucky at some moments, but you have to believe and work hard to have a little luck in life and in sports."
