"Ebola" cancels Uganda's friendlies in Marrakech.
The Ugandan Football Association announced the cancellation of the two friendly matches that were scheduled to bring the Uganda national team together with Tanzania and Madagascar on June 5 and 8 in Marrakech, as part of the international break designated by FIFA.
The Ugandan Association clarified in an official statement that the cancellation decision was communicated through the match organizers, indicating that the step was taken for reasons related to health and public safety, based on the directives of the relevant authorities, due to concerns over the outbreak of the Ebola virus in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The same source added that the Ugandan national team had already arrived in Morocco in preparation for the two matches before receiving the cancellation notice.
Rogers Mulindwa, head of the Ugandan national team delegation and a member of the executive committee of the Ugandan Football Association, stated that the Ugandan federation regrets the cancellation of the two friendly matches that were scheduled against Tanzania and Madagascar in Marrakech, confirming that the delegation members will return to their various destinations after the matches could not be held.
The Ugandan official took the opportunity to thank the Moroccan government and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation for the warm welcome and hospitality that the "Cranes" team delegation received during their stay in the kingdom.
The Ugandan Ministry of Health announced yesterday, Wednesday, in a statement published on its official account, that it had recorded six new cases of the Ebola virus.
The ministry reported that two individuals had recovered and left the hospital, while 12 others are still receiving treatment, and one person has died due to the virus.
The Ugandan national team had scheduled these two matches as part of its preparations for the upcoming continental competitions, having previously announced a list of 28 players to participate in the training camp in Morocco, but the cancellation decision has put an end to the planned program during the June international window.
