English club Chelsea mourns Bobby Tambling.
Bobby Tambling, one of the legends of Chelsea Football Club and the record holder for the club's all-time top scorer for many decades, passed away at the age of 84.
Chelsea confirmed the news of Tambling's death on Thursday, without providing further details. The Irish club Crosshaven, which the late Tambling previously managed, also announced the news.
Chelsea described their former player as "one of our most legendary players," adding that "his name is etched in large letters in the history of our club."
Tambling scored 202 goals in 370 matches for Chelsea between 1959 and 1970; a record that stood as the club's best scoring record until 2013, when it was surpassed by Frank Lampard.
Tambling made his debut for Chelsea in 1959 at the age of seventeen and was part of the team that won the English League Cup in 1965. He also scored a goal in the final match against Leicester City.
Tambling's record of scoring five goals in a single match against Aston Villa in 1966 still stands as a record in Chelsea's history. He later played for Crystal Palace and made three international appearances for the England national team.
After settling in the Irish city of Cork, Tambling took on coaching roles at Cork Celtic, Cork City, and Crosshaven.
The British news agency PA Media reported that he had been diagnosed with dementia in recent years.
Crosshaven club stated in a message posted on the platform "X": "With heavy hearts, Crosshaven announces the passing of our dear friend and former coach Bobby Tambling, a true Chelsea legend and a wonderful person in every sense of the word."
The statement added: "His passion for football was infectious to everyone. Bobby left a huge void in our lives, and we all became better, kinder, and richer for having known him."
