Large crowds accompany Paris Saint-Germain's celebration of their second European star.
To the tunes of the song "We Are the Champions" by the late Freddie Mercury and his band Queen, the players of Paris Saint-Germain and their coaching staff celebrated today, Sunday, winning the UEFA Champions League title for the second consecutive time, in the Champ de Mars square beneath the Eiffel Tower, in front of thousands of fans.
With a delay of over an hour from the original schedule, the European champions, who retained the title on Saturday by defeating Arsenal in the final via penalties, arrived from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport coming from Budapest under heavy security, passing in front of their fans on a red, blue, and white carpet, amidst a crowd waving flags in the club's colors or raising their phones to immortalize the moment, according to a reporter from Agence France-Presse.
The team is scheduled to be received later by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace, before meeting their fans at the Parc des Princes stadium.
Abu, 25, who has been a PSG fan since he was a "child," tells Agence France-Presse from Champ de Mars: "We are still in the euphoria of yesterday and we want the celebration to continue."
For him, the victory on Saturday evening in Budapest over Arsenal was "perhaps even more beautiful than last year," when his heroes crushed Inter Milan 5-0 to win their first title in the competition.
Abu says: "It was a very difficult match (ending 1-1 in regular and extra time, with Arsenal scoring first), and we were scared until the end. Winning on penalties was emotionally intense."
For her part, Mirna Makima, a 39-year-old physiotherapist from Belgium, says, "It was amazing, there was tension during the penalties, but in the end, it was positive tension."
Fans, mostly young people, chant "Paris, Paris" at the entrances of Champ de Mars, where several security checkpoints have been set up.
