Postponement of travel to South Africa for the World Cup.
The departure of the South African national team to Mexico for the World Cup finals was postponed today, Sunday, after several players were unable to obtain travel visas in time.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation reported that the team was preparing to board a private plane to its training camp in the Mexican city of Pachuca, before the trip was postponed indefinitely.
The delay has sparked official criticism, with Sports Minister Gaiton McKenzie describing what happened as a "travel and visa disaster," holding the South African Football Association responsible, and calling for a detailed report and action against those responsible for the crisis.
South Africa is preparing to play its first match in the tournament against Mexico, one of the host countries, on June 11, marking its first appearance in the finals since hosting the World Cup in 2010.
The team overcame an administrative hurdle during the qualifiers after its victory over Lesotho was annulled due to the inclusion of a suspended player, but it still managed to secure a qualification spot, finishing at the top of its group, one point ahead of Nigeria and Benin.
