Al-Wahidi: I learn everything from Hakimi.
Moroccan international Zakaria Wahdi is experiencing a remarkable period in his football career, having received a call-up to join the Moroccan national team’s camp in preparation for the 2026 World Cup; this will prevent him from playing in the playoff match with his team Genk against Gent.
In statements to the Belgian newspaper "Het Laatste Nieuws," Wahdi confirmed that his decision to represent Morocco was based on his personal conviction and his connection to his country of origin, despite having the opportunity to play for the Belgian national team.
The player, born in Antwerp, explained that he had never received any previous call-ups from the Belgian youth national teams, saying: "I was never called up to the Belgian youth teams, perhaps because I wasn't the biggest talent at that time. Morocco was the first to give me confidence, and of course, I followed my heart as well."
Wahdi pointed out that his previous participation with the Moroccan national team in the Olympics and the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations further strengthened his conviction to wear the "Atlas Lions" jersey, praising the atmosphere within the team and the quality of the infrastructure and organization.
The Genk player added: "I never hesitated in my choice for Morocco, and I didn't need to think twice."
Regarding the competition for the right-back position, the Moroccan international confirmed that he does not view the presence of Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi as competition but rather as an opportunity to learn from one of the best players in the world.
The same speaker added: "Hakimi is not a competitor for me; he is my teacher on the field. I observe everything he does and try to learn from him. For me, he is the best Moroccan player in history."
Moroccan international Zakaria Wahdi hopes to benefit from this new experience within the Moroccan national team, especially with the presence of prominent global names, in preparation for participating in the 2026 World Cup. He aims to develop his level and secure his place in the future within the "Atlas Lions" lineup.
