Liverpool severs ties with Dutchman Slot.
Liverpool FC has sacked its Dutch coach Arne Slot today, Saturday, stating that the club is seeking a "change in approach" following a disappointing defense of the English Premier League title.
The "Reds" finished the season in fifth place, 25 points behind champions Arsenal, despite spending a record amount in the league of nearly £450 million ($605 million) on new players during a single transfer window last year.
Bournemouth's coach, Spanish Andoni Iraola, is the leading candidate to replace him, having led "The Cherries" to European qualification for the first time in the club's history.
Just over a year ago, Slot was praised as a hero after taking on the tough task of succeeding German Jürgen Klopp and leading Liverpool to its record twentieth league title in his first season with the team; however, fans turned against the Dutch coach this season after a series of lackluster performances.
There were also signs of unrest within the dressing room, notably from Egyptian Mohamed Salah, who called in a fiery social media post for a return to "heavy football," referring to Klopp's high-tempo style.
Salah's comments were well-received by several current squad players.
Despite these troubles, reports indicated that Slot (47 years old) would have received an additional grace period after securing qualification for the Champions League.
The club's owners, in the Fenway Sports Group, succumbed to fan pressure and decided to sack the former Feyenoord coach.
The club stated in a statement: "We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary for the club to continue progressing. It must be emphasized again that this decision was not made lightly; on the contrary."
It added: "The conclusion we reached is based on the belief that the team's trajectory is best addressed through a change in direction. This does not diminish the work Arne has done here, nor the respect we have for him. It is also not a reflection of his talent. Rather, it is an indication of the need for a different approach."
He continued: "Arne leaves us with our gratitude, carrying the Premier League title, knowing that the doors of Anfield will always remain open for him and his family."
Liverpool also stated that "the process of appointing a successor has begun."
Many fans had hoped for the return of Spanish Xabi Alonso to Anfield; however, the former club midfielder will instead take over as coach of Chelsea next season.
