Manchester City honors Guardiola.
The English football club Manchester City held a farewell party for their Spanish coach Pep Guardiola, after he played his last match with the team following a successful ten-year career, during which the team won 20 domestic and international titles.
Guardiola concluded his career with City with a 1-2 loss to Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, in the thirty-eighth and final round of the English Premier League.
After the match, the English club not only honored Guardiola but also the duo John Stones and Bernardo Silva, who will leave the club when their contracts expire next June; Guardiola and the English club also made sure to honor several members of the coaching staff, as well as former stars like Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho, German Ilkay Gundogan, and Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson Moraes, who wore the English club's jersey for 8 years before moving to Turkish club Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2025.
German Gundogan was Guardiola's first signing at Manchester City during the summer of 2016, and the German player wore the team's jersey for 8 years, which included a brief stint when he moved to Spanish club Barcelona in the summer of 2023 and returned to City after just one season.
The BBC reported that Valenti, Pep Guardiola's 94-year-old father, was present in the stands, applauding his son as the Spanish coach presented commemorative gifts to Gundogan, Ederson, Stones, and Bernardo Silva, bearing the number of matches they played with the team; this occurred after they passed through a guard of honor on the pitch.
Bernardo joined Manchester City in the summer of 2017 from French club Monaco, and a year earlier, John Stones joined from Everton.
A picture of Guardiola also dominated the electronic screen at the Etihad Stadium, accompanied by three phrases: "Changed the game, Maker of history, City forever"; while everyone present on the pitch wore the number 10 jersey, symbolizing the era of the Spanish philosopher with the English club.
Manchester City had announced the renaming of their newly expanded North Stand, which will fully open for the first time this week, to "The Pep Guardiola Stand." An artist has also been commissioned to create a statue of Guardiola, which is set to be placed at the entrance of the stand.
