Wahbi hopes to achieve victory in the "AFCON".
Mohamed Wahbi, the coach of the Moroccan national football team, confirmed that the results of the draw for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which placed the "Atlas Lions" in Group A alongside Gabon, Niger, and Lesotho, did not bring any surprises for the national team, noting that "these are not teams we do not know; we have faced them in recent months and years."
Wahbi emphasized, in his statements to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation channel, that the ambition and legitimate goal for him in the Africa Cup of Nations is to win the title, adding that the team is required to "progress through the rounds and qualify well," with the necessity to "prepare in the best way and perform at the level of the event and what Morocco represents today."
The national coach added that the Moroccan team will enter these qualifiers with "a lot of respect," explaining that the Gabon team "proved not long ago that it is a team that deserves respect." He continued: "We faced them twice, and they had a good run in the World Cup qualifiers, and they have high-quality players."
Regarding the match against the Niger team, Wahbi said: "There is a kind of emotion because we will face Badou Zaki, who is considered a legend in Morocco, and for us as coaches as well," adding that the Niger team "is a developing team, having finished the World Cup qualifiers behind Morocco and ahead of teams like Zambia and Tanzania."
He also pointed out that the results of recent encounters against the Niger and Lesotho teams confirm the necessity of taking all matches seriously, saying: "We won against Niger 2-1 in the last minutes, and we also won against Lesotho 1-0, and in other matches, we won 5-0 and 7-0; this is evidence that it depends on us."
Wahbi concluded his statements by affirming that winning the Africa Cup of Nations remains a primary goal for the Moroccan national team, saying: "After the World Cup, we will focus on preparing for these matches; because winning the Africa Cup of Nations remains a big goal for us and for all Moroccans, God willing."
