Fermin Lopez will miss the World Cup.
The Spanish football club Barcelona announced today, Monday, that their player Fermín López will undergo surgery, which will prevent him from participating in the World Cup.
Barcelona clarified in a statement on its official website that López suffered a fracture in the fifth metatarsal bone of his right foot during the match against Real Betis, confirming that the player will undergo surgery.
For its part, the newspaper "Mundo Deportivo" commented: "Fermín López will officially miss the World Cup due to this injury."
The Catalan newspaper added that the fifth metatarsal bone, which connects the little toe to the ankle, remains susceptible to fractures due to stress from repeated impacts or a high number of matches.
It noted that Fermín López is known for his strength and aggressiveness in tackles, and that recovery from his injury will require at least two months.
Fermín López participated in Spain's victory in the Euro 2024 Championship, and a month later, he won a gold medal with his country at the Paris Olympics, receiving the award for best player in the tournament thanks to scoring 6 goals, including a brace in the 5-3 victory over France in the final at the Parc des Princes.
The World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Earlier today, Monday, "Mundo Deportivo" reported that there is serious concern regarding Fermín López ahead of the World Cup, after the player had to leave the field at halftime during his team's match against Real Betis yesterday, Sunday.
The aforementioned newspaper added that the Barcelona player is still suffering from ongoing pain on Monday morning and will undergo intensive medical examinations to determine the severity of his injury to the right metatarsal.
The same source indicated that the likelihood of Fermín missing the 2026 World Cup would be very high if it turns out that he has a fracture.
The 23-year-old player contributed to Barcelona's treble win in the domestic competitions "La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España" in 2025, in addition to the league and Supercopa de España double this season.
The Spanish national team will begin its journey in the 2026 World Cup by competing in Group H, which includes the teams of Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde.
