The Moroccan national team leads the top teams in Africa in the draw for the "AFCON 2027" qualifiers.
The draw for the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place next year in Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, at the headquarters of the African Football Confederation (CAF) in Cairo.
The 48 teams qualified for the qualifiers have been divided into four pots, with Ghana and Cape Verde, who qualified for the 2026 World Cup this summer, missing out on the first pot.
Both the "Black Stars" and the "Blue Sharks" secured their spots in the global event hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico starting June 11, after failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations 2025.
The rankings were determined based on the current FIFA ranking, noting that 10 out of the 12 teams in the first pot have previously won the largest sporting event in Africa, including the Moroccan elite.
The top two teams from each of the nine groups will qualify for the finals. The three hosts, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will automatically be present in the finals scheduled from June 19 to July 17, 2027, but they will participate in the qualifiers to gain experience in competitive matches.
The presence of this trio means that only one team will qualify from each separate group in which these teams are placed.
Ongoing concerns have been raised about the ability of the three East African countries to host the first tournament in the region since the 1976 finals in Ethiopia.
However, CAF President Patrice Motsepe from South Africa confirmed that the 2027 edition will kick off on schedule, telling reporters: "The next Africa Cup of Nations will be held in the east of the continent, and I have no doubt about that, despite all the challenges."
The first and second rounds of the qualifiers will take place on September 21 and October 6, the third and fourth on November 9 and 17, and the fifth and final sixth rounds on March 22 and 30, 2027.
