Incidents of discrimination embarrass the Spanish World Cup
International media reports highlighted the escalating controversy in Spain due to issues of racism and discrimination, a few years before it hosted the 2030 World Cup finals jointly with Morocco and Portugal, in an exceptional edition that brings together two continents.
The global Associated Press revealed that Spain once again found itself at the center of international controversy due to issues of racism and discrimination within football stadiums, as evidenced by the “La Roja” match against the Egyptian national team in Barcelona, where anti-Muslim chants were issued from some fans, in addition to booing whistles during the playing of the Egyptian national anthem, which sparked the condemnation of the Egyptian Federation, at a time when the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) opened an official investigation, in parallel with the move of the Spanish security authorities.
The report considered that these facts raise questions about the image of Spanish football, especially in light of the approaching date of the World Cup, despite the official authorities’ confirmation that such behavior remains isolated and does not represent the general public.
The agency listed a group of previous incidents that increased the intensity of the controversy, most notably the racist insults that Vinicius Junior was subjected to in 2023, which caused widespread reactions and resulted in strict penalties and measures inside Spanish stadiums. She also touched on the case of Luis Rubiales after the 2023 Women's World Cup, considering that it contributed to highlighting the problem of sexual discrimination within the football system, after the incident of kissing player Jenny Hermoso without her consent.
On the other hand, the same source highlighted the Spanish authorities’ confirmation of progress in confronting these phenomena, by launching campaigns against intolerance and enhancing the presence of women in decision-making positions, in addition to adopting control measures during major demonstrations.
The Associated Press reported the calls of a number of football stars, including Vinicius Junior, for the necessity of continuing to fight racism, stressing that the phenomenon is not limited to Spain only, but rather requires collective efforts at the international level.
The report concluded that Spain, despite its positive results and its recent European crown, will remain under international scrutiny in the coming period, as it seeks to successfully organize the 2030 World Cup and compete with Morocco to host the final match.
