A new financial scandal shakes Kenyan football
A new financial scandal shook the corridors of the Kenya Football Association, after it was decided to suspend its president, Hussein Rashid Mohammed, from his duties with immediate effect, according to an official statement issued today, Friday, against the backdrop of suspicions of embezzlement of funds.
The Federation confirmed that Vice President MacDonald Mariga Wanyama will temporarily manage the affairs of the institution, until the ongoing investigations are completed and their final results are revealed.
The decision was not limited to the president only, as it also included the suspension of Secretary-General Denis Gicheru, in addition to the appointed member of the Executive Committee, Abdullah Yusuf Ibrahim.
The three officials are facing an investigation into an alleged embezzlement case valued at 42 million Kenyan shillings, equivalent to about 300,000 euros, in one of the biggest crises to hit Kenyan football in the recent period.
These developments place Kenya at a sensitive stage within its football system, awaiting the results of investigations into the fate of the arrested officials and the future of the federation’s management.
