Mohamed El Morabity, champion of the Marathon of the Sands
Moroccan runner Mohamed Almorabti was crowned the champion of the 40th edition of the “legendary” Marathon of the Sands, on Saturday, after the sixth and final stage of this competition, which was characterized by strength and excitement.
Mohamed Al-Morabti confirmed his superiority in this race, as he topped the final overall standings with a total time of 20 hours, 47 minutes and 39 seconds, ahead of his brother Rachid Al-Morabti, who came in second place, 28 minutes and 46 seconds behind, while Frenchman Ludovic Pommery came in third place, with a difference of 31 minutes and 4 seconds.
In the female category, Frenchwoman Marilyn Nakache won the title of this edition, after finishing the competition with a total time of 25 hours, 54 minutes and 29 seconds, confirming her strong performance and regularity throughout the stages of the race.
Second place went to Moroccan Aziza El Omrani, who continued her brilliance, while American Desiree Linden came in third place, making the women's race a diverse podium.
This edition of the Marathon of the Sands, organized between April 3 and 13, was marked by the participation of more than 1,500 male and female competitors representing 62 nationalities.
During 11 days, including 9 days in the heart of the Moroccan desert, the participants covered a distance of approximately 270 kilometers in conditions of food self-sufficiency, in an experience that combines physical and mental challenge in a harsh desert environment.
